Frequently asked questions

Check out some answers to common questions that come up

Do I need to install a battery to go solar?

You are not required to install a battery with your solar installation, however, your payback and bill reduction, benefit greatly from adding energy storage to your installation. This is especially true in our primary markets of California and Hawaii. In both California and Hawaii, net meting is no longer in place. This means that without energy storage, you would not receive the financial compensation, if you were exporting power to the grid, during the day time when your system is producing energy. Historically, credits given to solar homes during the day, were equal to the rates being charged during the day. Today in both Hawaii and California markets, credit value for any exported power, is between .07 cents per kWh and .15 cents per kWh.

The other significant benefit of adding storage to your solar system is that in a gird down scenario, which is becoming increasingly more common in both Hawaii and Southern, California, you will still have access to your solar energy, with the installation of energy storage.

Can I add batteries to my existing solar system?

Yes. You can add storage to your existing solar system. You can replace your older string inverter with the built in Tesla Powerwall 3 inverter that comes with installing a 13.5 kWh, Tesla Powerwall 3. If you have microinverters, you can AC couple, the Tesla Powerwall 3 battery, and integrate it with your existing solar panels and microinverters.
