It's a lesser-known program compared to the old federal tax credit, but for the right homeowner, it can meaningfully offset the cost of adding storage to your home. Here's what it actually offers and how it works. ## Who runs it, and who's it for? San Diego Community Power is the public energy provider serving San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, National City, and unincorporated San Diego County. The Solar Battery Savings Program is their answer to a real problem: since California shifted from the old Net Energy Metering system to the new Solar Billing Plan (also known as NEM 3.0), the value of sending excess solar power back to the grid has dropped significantly. That change made standalone solar less financially attractive on its own and batteries help homeowners recapture more of that value by storing power instead of exporting it for a lower credit. The program is open to single-family homeowners who are active SDCP residential customers, whether you're adding a battery to an existing solar system or installing solar and storage together for the first time. ## What you actually get The program offers two separate pieces of money: **1. An upfront rebate**, paid based on your battery's usable storage capacity. How much you qualify for depends on two things: - **Your customer type:** whether you're on a standard "market rate" or classified as "non-market rate" (which includes customers enrolled in CARE or FERA assistance programs, or those living in a designated Community of Concern) - **Whether you already have solar:** new solar-plus-battery installations qualify for a higher rebate than adding a battery to an existing system Rebate amounts currently range from $250 per kWh up to $500 per kWh depending on your situation, with a maximum of $10,000 per home over the life of the program. **2. An ongoing performance incentive** of $0.10 per kWh, paid annually for up to 10 years, for battery capacity your system actually discharges during the program's dispatch window on weekday afternoons and evenings — the hours when the grid is under the most strain. ## How the program works - **Your battery powers your home first.** On some weekday evenings, SDCP draws on up to half your battery to support the grid, and pays you $0.10 for every kWh it uses. The other half is always yours, including for backup. - **Charged by your own sun.** Your solar system is sized to fill the battery every day. - **A five-year partnership.** You stay with SDCP for five years to keep the full rebate. If you leave early, part of it is paid back. - **Rebates step down as funding fills**, so the amount available today may be higher than it will be later. ## Why it pays to have us check Only SDCP-approved installers and batteries qualify, and the rebate can vary a lot between quotes.
